Science Beyond RE A glimpse into science news outside the classroom. By Dylan Tie-Shue On October 2nd, 2018, the Nobel Prize in Physics was announced at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden. This year’s ceremony proved especially momentous, however: for the first time in over 55 years, the Nobel Prize in Physics was co- awarded to a woman. The Prize was presented to Canadian Physicist Donna Strickland with French Scientist Gérard Mourou, and Arthur Ashkin for “ groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics .” Prior, the only other women to win the Nobel Prize in Phsyics had been Maria Geoppert- Mayer for her discoveries in nuclear structure in 1963, and Marie Curie for her co-discovery of radiation in 1903.
