How did you find out about this activity? How did you apply? Diez: Through family friends in Colombia Ratzan: A doctor at University of Miami told my mom about it. I applied through their website. What was your role there? Diez: I went to the hospital everyday as if I were a student at the university completing required clinic hours. I was working in the large animal department and attended/participated in rounds, studied and took care of patients and their cases, and scrubbed into surgeries. Ratzan: I was a research assistant intern. I performed lab work just like any other researcher there. What did you gain from this experience? Diez: I gained a whole lot of new knowledge pertaining to biology. I also caught a glimpse of the research side of medicine. Ratzan: This experience was amazing; it really opened my eyes and made me realize that I wanted to be an equine veterinarian. Would you recommend this to someone else? Diez: The activity was great but I don’t think other people would be able to do it. I was able to get special privileges because I knew people at the university and hospital. Ratzan: Absolutely.
