48 It had been a few days since World War III had begun, and there hadn?t been many moments of joy. The world seemed to slowly deteriorate as cities burned, and clouds of smoke covered the sky. Laura and Maya?s town hadn?t gotten hit yet, but it was only a matter of time. Laura pushed Maya on her wheelchair up the ramp to school. As Laura moved around her wheelchair to pull her up the final stretch, a deafening boom shook the ground. A bomb. The building lurched sideways, and Laura fell to the ground, letting go of Maya . ?No! Maya!?Laura screamed. Maya hit a bump in the road, and fell out of the wheelchair, screaming and sliding across the concrete. Maya looked up, and to her horror, the building started to fall sideways. ?Laura! Laura, get out of there!?Maya?s yell was drowned out by the collective screaming of her classmates. The ones who she had known for her whole life. The ones who she played with during recess. The ones who had made fun of her because she was in a wheelchair. Maya crawled as fast as she could towards the building. She didn?t want to leave Laura, but it was too late.
