Little Inklings 2026

Every year since I can remember I have loved the last day of school The bell rings at 3:15 And I am greeted by 80 days of freedom with open arms But today I cannot help feel nostalgia For the days of cubbies and lunchboxes The days when playing on the run down swingset That pungent, coppery smell would linger on the top of my mouth Could bring joy to me for hours The days when I would come home from school And having nothing and everything to do all at once With my mind, a book, and my sister for company The days when the sound of rain outside the classroom Whose violent pattering against the window Seemingly begging to be let in That I would hear before I saw Would crash down on my world As if Atlas had failed to hold up the sky The days when a global pandemic Could make my family only grow closer And the day fly by quicker Even as boredom was lingering Like a fragrant perfume in the air The days when reading books that were 3 pages long And took me a sum of 15 minutes to read Or making art pieces that were so abstract They would make Jackson Pollock's work look like realism The Last Day of School by Grace Kern ’30 81
