A Shimmering During a cold, dark dusk, on top of the green, rolling hills, there is a lone tree. The lone tree has overlooked the empty plain for its entire life, from when it had been a youthful sprout to now when it has sprouted into adulthood. The lone tree has seen this plain in every shade you could imagine, its orange and dampness during the fall, its cold white embrace during the winter, its vibrant colors and wet weather during the spring, and finally its hot dry breath in the summer. Yet despite this, tonight is different from the rest, for it is time for the tree to rest. The tree taking its few final breaths, accepting its fate, for it has lived its life, seen this world to its fullest, and now it must die, for that is the fate of the tree. The tree does not fight, for there is no need nor desire. The tree is happy with its life, and now, it will die. The riverbank shimmering in the light of the sun, the cold water rushing through the stream, the surrounding fauna rustling with the river as it gushes, animals alike come to drink, temporarily ignoring their hunger in place of their thirst. It is peaceful there, it is near silent there, the truth of nature is there. 7 by Karmelo Alexander ’30
