ALLEGRA ORLOFSKY ❜ 28 hOW ZI POW CREATED MUSIC Long ago, Nu Gua came down to Earth and created humans. Humans had evolved. They started as apes, then cave men and went through the ages. Written languages and spoken languages were formed. Nevertheless, let’s go back to a time where spoken languages were few and monarchies were being formed. The earth wasn’t a very lively place, and there wasn’t much history to study, nor many fun activities to do. Humans turned to the gods in need of fun. Nu Gua, Goddess of Creation and Renewal called the god of ideas Zi Pow. Zi Pow thought that she really knew humans. She tended to think that she was always right. So when she got there she thought that pleasing humans would be easy, but again they were human. The first thing she tried was having people sort through the city's mail. Obviously they found it extremely boring. Next, she tried having everybody clean the church, and - surprise, surprise - everybody hated it. The last thing that she tried was meditating, and it was calming but not fun. Eventually all the humans decided that the gods were stupid and they should just never pray to the gods ever again. All the gods were extremely mad at Zi Pow. None of the gods spoke to her for years upon years. Zi Pow was really sad, so she decided to do something about it. She thought about many ways to understand humans, so she disguised herself as a human and went down to earth. After around two months, she realized that humans were lacking in the arts. She came up with plays, and that worked for a while, but the people wanted more. She sat down and started tapping her fingers and humming a song of the heavens. A young girl named Zula heard the goddess and started to hum the same song. More people heard the hum and along the way, lyrics were added. Soon more hums and more lyrics came to be. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was how Zi Pow created music. 12
