Memorial Tree Mr. Matthew Stock Memorial Tree, like the concept of Etz Chaim, is a tree of life. It is a tree of those who came before us and is a tree of those who will come after us. Local lore is that this tree is unlike all of those around it, and I believe that. Etz Chaim is a metaphor for a greater pursuit of understanding. My photograph “Memorial Tree” of a Taxodium distichum, or bald cypress, is the largest bald cypress I have ever come across in the various prairies, wetlands, and hammocks pursued in the quest of an emotional and photographic connection to the land.
