Intergenerational Poem Gabrielle Heckler ’27 and Dr. Julia Clarke I fly far from home Like the surface of Mars, Moab appeared on the horizon, Where the sun rises high above Overwhelmingly orange The orange surrounds me, the unfamiliar dome I was there for a wedding of two friends I met in a very different landscape– The arid breeze, an unfamiliar shove Gray buildings, imposing monuments, our nation’s capital “You have to see Arches–it’s required,” my friend’s sister told me, handing me her national parks sticker So before the ceremony, I drove to the entry point of Arches The heat surrounds differently than before And hiked to the famed Delicate Arch without enough water Natural curves are anything but an eye sore “I’m from New York,” I apologized to some other hikers, who handed me a spare, unopened water bottle I traveled so far just for them “I’m not used to this dryness.” I drank it in, not even feeling the hydration set in Wanting to see how it can happen 26
