Color climbed to the top of the ladder and All I could do was marvel at the sight and pray That I wouldn’t kill them. After all, the jonquils didn’t last Neither did the peonies I didn’t want to destroy the roses too. They weren’t mine. I didn’t plant them. I just wanted to celebrate their beauty as long as I could. But flowers are living, breathing things That eventually die Like love I guess And that is exactly what the roses did. And then In the heat of July A vine began taking over my life. “choke weed” the neighbors called it. Better get rid of it Before it strangles everything left living But I couldn’t do it.
