Somewhere Over the Rainbow Kayra Serpenguzel ’25 I don’t recall Everything from when I was a child But I remember her voice, Singing Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly I saw those birds, imagined them gliding over my apartment in Istanbul it was a gray “kumru,” dove, not a bluebird But that didn’t matter Viridian forests remained stagnant across from me Across the bridge, across from the panel of glass I stood behind on the 29th floor Too far, because I was stuck inside industrial skyscrapers Streets of muddy snow I longed for a rainbow Someday i’ll wish upon a star I wished on the stars I willed to see Outside my bedroom If I squinted my eyes until my vision blurred And the smog from the city melted away I swore I saw a star, when the night cleared away, But my dream Was to see the hues of pastel pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple 7
