The year is 2015 We are everywhere to be seen After all— Earth turns for the Anthropocene “Age of Man”, or so it is called Age of Lost Land Age of Final Strands straying at the ends unfurling like fingers grasping for a savior Few to be found Closed lids all around The Age for a Final Stand: an age left unmanned Oceans rise, Glaciers fall— But who will answer the call? The year is 1987 The Kauai O’o is nowhere to be seen In the Age of Death, it comes as no surprise (truly, we all surmised) Extinction, our Faustian friend Does intend To snuff another light Hope dying in the night “Dear Lord!— There is but one Kauai O’o left Please, help us stop this theft!” Yet the bird’s fate is sealed Progress’s Price cannot be appealed We know it to be true, But that little bird has no clue Age of Final Songs Chloe Alfonso ’24
