JACKET Anonymous I burned that oversized burgundy jacket, The one that you took to Colorado. You should have packed the batteries for the heater, But instead, you wanted a piece of me, Something of mine to take on your travels. Oh, you had more than a piece, But this isn’t about that. That was a year ago, And I burned that burgundy jacket. I never wore it again after that day. When I put it on, I was enveloped by you, Consumed by you, The smell of your cologne, I couldn’t stand the regret. When I threw you into the fire Your smell spread. Chemical warfare to my heart And then nothing. Only smokey embers remained. Do you think the flames knew what they had done? Incinerating the last piece of you I had. They burned bright without remorse, Without hesitation, Just how we loved one another. 49
