Margarita is a woman who wakes up before the sun rises and goes to bed only after the moon has taken its place. Margarita is a woman who left her mother country, yet speaks only her mother’s tongue. Margarita is a woman who cleans the house, who walks her kids to school, who walks down the street to the coin laundry, who walks herself to work, who walks around as a busgirl in la taquería, who walks around as a busgirl in the next restaurant, who walks to pick up her children from school, who walks quickly to escape the suggestive looks of weird men, who walks because the money can either buy food or bus but never both, who walked across the angry river holding both children. Margarita’s husband drowned in the angry river. Margarita is a woman whose children don’t remember what their father looked like. Margarita is a woman who has not returned to church since leaving home but asks Guadalupe to save her children. Margarita is a woman who goes to sleep wondering; did she do the right thing.
