In the class she wrote with precision. The flick of her pen, a surgical incision. Painting the letters in a single stroke, Paying diligence to how the teacher spoke. She was here for a reason, she told herself, That God chose her, and chose no one else. Reared in a country an ocean away, Mom brought her hopes of a brighter day. Her dad and brother were both left behind. That’s what divorce does, she’d soon come to find. The beads in her rosary, she held with the purest heart. This little girl already knew her life would be hard. A whole other language she would now have to learn, So she continued with her work, the teacher stern. As it is now, was in the beginning, and ever shall, working hard she would be. Beautiful is she. In her, a soul without judgment, a girl was willing to love. Her mother found another man, one she had always dreamed of. The man was rich of heart, not necessarily of house. All the same, with love they would expeditiously be spoused, And evermore willing to provide a home would he be, The beginning of a blessed life they would share happily. No rancor had she in welcoming her new father. [She] hugged him as though he’d be with them no longer. With tears in her eyes, Clutching those beloved beads at her side, For mother’s joy had she prayed. Beautiful is She Rogelio Munoz-Franco 33
