Inklings 2022

It started as some virus from China. Everyone felt for those infected and dying while also thinking thank God it’s over there and not here. And then, one day, the coronavirus was here. Wherever “here” was, it was there. For Her, “here” was an apartment complex in downtown Miami, Florida. Before anyone begins to wonder why Her is written as Her and not the much more common “her,” it must be clarified that Her is Her’s actual name. It’s written on her birth certificate. Her’s parents proba - bly had a very odd sense of humor. She wouldn’t know because her dad worked constantly and her mom ran off to marry some guy who lived on a houseboat. One day, Her’s mom’s husband’s boat’s anchor got detached from the seafloor, and they were never seen again. So, she never really got the chance to ask either of her parents why they decided to name her Her. Because of this unfortunate boating incident, she lived full time with her father in their little apartment in a building that had a gym and a sur- rounding walkway. It must also be noted that Her did not go to school. It wasn’t that Her was socially inept or suffered from any illnesses. She was just too smart and tested out of everything anyone could ever teach her by the time she was five. To pass the time she saved by not attend - ing school, she went to the gym. A lot. Her was actually quite buff. With coronavirus, though, came the closing of gyms, so Her began to run on the walkway. But then that closed too, so she was stuck in her apart- ment doing shoulder presses with unused laundry detergent. Her and her dad didn’t go through very much laundry detergent because Her’s dad couldn’t be working if he was doing laundry, and he was never not working. After a couple of weeks in quarantine, Her had established her own rou- tine: 1. Wake up at some point 2. Exercise 3. Go to sleep when it was dark outside Simple. Unfortunately for Her, her father’s building was particularly wor- ried about coronavirus and tightened the rules for quarantining, causing Third Person Pandemic Sabrina Soto 17
