Inklings 2021
EDITOR’S NOTE For the past year, we have been told to stay at home. Over and over, the words “social distancing” and “self-quarantine” have been ingrained in our minds, rendered us isolated from our friends and loved ones. So how can we travel or connect with others if we must stay apart for our own safety? Stories. Poetry. Art. When reading the creative works of our classmates, we are instantly transported to other worlds. From alternate realities and outer space to Buffalo, NY and Peru, this curated collection of narratives and poems teleports its readers to faraway places and distant times. All the while, the paintings, sculptures, and digital artwork found in this issue of Inklings allow the reader to connect with the artists in a deeply personal manner, for artwork elicits emotion in a way words cannot. Several themes featured in this magazine include falling in love, growing up, spending time with family, and connecting with nature. Each piece, although unique in its own way, evokes a sense of familiarity and a sense of shared humanity. This year’s issue presents an inclusive and balanced array of art, showcasing the abundant talent in our school. It provides a window into the thoughts, opinions, fears, and joys of our peers. As Editor-in-Chief, I am honored to help assemble this compilation of the diverse creative expression at Ransom Everglades. Creating the 2021 Issue of Inklings has been an experience unlike any other. The circumstances affecting our daily lives during this past year have challenged us in ways we never expected. Nonetheless, Ransom’s spirit has proven to be unbreakable as students continued to pour their hearts into their art and share it with others. This issue is a testament to the dedication and the resilience of our peers. Thank you to Mr. McCrink, our new faculty advisor, for his support, and to the rest of the Inklings staff, who have worked diligently in the creation of this publication. We adapted in the face of adversity and grew together as a team. I would also like to thank the students who bravely submitted their work to be read and enjoyed by the RE community.
