INSOMNIAC Madeleine Bagnall I fidget at my bedside, eyes wide, impatient mania gripping my entire being, guiding my hand as I scribble words to a page. It’s three in the morning. The sun has long ago set, but that does not dim the flickering of flames in my brain. My mind is alight, embers flying in all directions. I watch as they flutter onto the fraying notebook in front of me like falling stars, dazzling, brilliant. I know I won’t understand the flecks as they settle into ash when morning comes. For now, for me, the lights are still on. — Insomniac PIANO PLAYER Lucia Rose Dahn 37
