64 Ransom Everglades LOG SPRING 2022 In Loving Mem y Jack August ’77 died in his home in Kansas City, Mo., on January 14, 2022. Born in Miami, he attended Ransom Everglades School and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1986. During his life, August brought gastronomic delight to many, both as a distinguished chef and as the original owner of August Produce in Highlands, N.C. He settled in Kansas City where he became an avid hockey fan and in- dulged his love of music. Jacqueline Massoth and her granddaughter, Lylah, were two very special lights in his life. August is survived by his sisters, Dale Genet of Colorado and Lisa August ’76 of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Blanche and Arthur August. Carolyn Spencer Carson ’61 passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021. Carolyn was born January 9, 1944, in Caroleen, N.C. She grew up in Miami, where she attended the Everglades School for Girls and Florida Bible College. Moving to St. Louis in 1970, she led the music ministry of the youth ministry Kibbutz as well as of the church founded and pastored by her husband, Clayton Community Church, where she served in many other capacities including disci- pling many future church leaders. She worked with children in north St. Louis through the Kibbutz ministry for 24 years. She had a particular heart for missionary work, which included organizing support for missionaries and going on short-term mission trips to Brazil, Cuba and Kazakhstan. She also trained leaders in Sicily. She worked as an office manager for Flo Products in Creve Coeur, Mo., for many years. She was pre- ceded in death by her parents, William and Berrene Spencer, and her husband, Rev. Eugene Wayne Carson. Carolyn is survived by her children, Stephen (Heather) Carson, Jonathan Carson, and Rachel (Michael) Ferguson; her grandchildren, Laurellyn, Madeleine, Spencer, Ransom, Judah, Caleb, Miriam and Lucy Carson; and Asher and Solomon Douchant. Also Isabela, Natalie, Daria and Margot Carson and their mother Jennifer Carson. Anne Bertram Endler ’72 passed away at her home in Garrison, N.Y., early on the morning of January 2, 2022, after a quiet, valiant fight with cancer. She was 67. Anne grew up with her two sisters, three brothers and cousin in Coconut Grove, attending Gulliver Academy and then high school at Everglades School for Girls. She loved music and was an accomplished member of her high school’s glee club as well as a popular singer in local cafes during her high school and college years. Having traveled extensively with her family, including summers on Martha’s Vineyard, Anne attended Pine Manor College and graduated from Boston University, where she and her husband met. Anne honed her considerable interior design skills while enjoying working with her mother, Pauline Bertram. Upon her mother’s passing, Anne carried on her decorat- ing firm, P.B. Interiors, completing several more projects in Garrison and New York City. Anne was proud to be a long-time member and past president of the Philipstown Garden Club, where she expanded her knowledge of, and appreciation for, sound environmental practices, gardening and the art of flower arranging while reveling in the club’s sense of community. A lover of animals, Anne could not bear their mistreatment or discomfort. Appreciative of all organizations which sought to care for the homeless or neglected, she adopted three cats from Mid-Hudson Animal Aid and these new fam- ily members brought great joy, staying very close to her bed during her final days. In addition to her husband, Peter, Anne is survived by her sisters, Madelaine Bertram Osborne ’81 of Denver, Colo., and Caroline Bertram ’74 of North Palm Beach, Fla.; her brothers, Digby Bertram ’78 of Winter Park, Fla. and Morgan Bertram ’75 of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Former Ransom Everglades trustee Stephen Cypen passed away on February 6, 2022. Stephen was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1944, and moved to Miami Beach in 1946. He earned his undergradu- ate degree in 1965 from the University of Florida, and his law degree from the University of Miami in 1968. Thereafter, he joined his fa- ther, Judge Cypen, in Miami Beach, and enjoyed a successful law career. In 1971, Stephen married Arlyn Cypen (née Samuels) and shared 51 beautiful years together along with two daughters and four grandchildren. Stephen dedicated himself to commu- nity leadership, serving as a member of the Miami Jewish Health Board of Directors for 35 years and chairman of the board from 2004 until 2013; founder and former trustee of Mount Sinai Medical Center; for- mer trustee of Ransom Everglades School; past president of Miami Beach Kiwanis Club; past president of Miami Beach Bar Association; member of the Miami-Dade County Bar Association; former board member of Here’s Help; Town Attorney for the Town of Surfside; and an active alumnus with the University of Florida and University of Miami. Stephen is survived by his devoted wife, Arlyn Cypen, his two daughters, Jennifer Cypen Kaplan ’90 and Leslie (Peter) Diamond ’92 , and four grand- children – Benjamin Kaplan ’23, Annabelle Kaplan ’26, Lila Diamond ’23, and Izzie Diamond ’28 . He is also survived by his sister, Bonnie Cypen Epstein; brothers Wayne (Nicole) Cypen, Tad Cypen, and Myles (Tony) Cypen; in addition to many nieces and nephews.
