RE Log Spring 2022

SPRING 2022 Ransom Everglades LOG 37 By Dave Villano ’79, boys’ soccer head coach The RE boys’ soccer team completed one of its most successful seasons ever, reaching the state championship title game where it dropped a tough 2-0 loss to Tampa Prep, the number one ranked boys’ high school team in the nation. The Raiders, who dominated play much of the game, finished their season ranked third nationally, the highest in school history. The loss ended the team’s 15-game winning streak, including six straight shutouts during its postseason run. Despite the loss, the team can boast its defense of last year’s district title, its first regional championship in six years, and only its third trip to the state final in program history. The team’s 18-1-3 record included wins over state soccer powerhouses Gulliver Prep, Belen Jesuit, Westminster Christian and The Bolles School of Jacksonville. Overall, the Raiders outscored their opponents by a margin of 62 goals to 11. The Raiders were led by goalkeeper Jasper Broad ’22 , a Colorado College commit, whose 15 shutouts were among the most in school history. Co-captain Rylan Sadler ’22, Christian Sosa ’23 , and Haverford College-bound Juan Rivera ’22 anchored the defense. A wide collection of players shared the team’s goal-scoring duties with co-captain Dillon Kaye ’22 notching nine, Kobe Lopez ’23 scoring eight and Felipe de Cardenas ’22 adding seven. The team’s signature possession-style passing attack – a key to the Raiders success in recent years – was led by David Pulido ’22, Nicky Denaro ’22 and Nicky Goldberg ’21.
